Gesso
Gesso is a undercoat that you use to prime various surfaces before painting. My favourite technique is to paint an ugly piece of fabric with gesso and then paint over it when its dry. It makes the fabric firm which can be a real advantage when making journal covers etc. The fabric can still be hand or machine stitched.
